More At-Home Newborn Photography FAQs
For me, Bay Area newborn photography is about preserving the first experiences you share with your baby and the love already filling your home. I’m a Berkeley-based newborn photographer serving families throughout the East Bay, including Oakland, Alameda, Walnut Creek, and surrounding areas across the San Francisco Bay Area.
During an at-home session, my only plan is to step into your little love bubble, gently guide you, and document your family just as you are: happy, tired, and filled with love. In this guide, I’m sharing planning tips, answers to common questions, and real in-home newborn sessions to show how personal these photographs can feel.

There’s something so special about photographing a new baby in the place where your family is spending most of its time together.
Your home is where you’re learning your baby’s cues, settling into new routines, rocking them to sleep, and figuring out what life looks like as your family grows. Even the smallest details can become important parts of your memories later. An at-home session also means you don’t need to worry about getting everyone out the door on time. I come to you, and we can work at a pace that feels comfortable for your family.
During your session, we can photograph in the nursery, primary bedroom, living room, or any other space where your family naturally spends time together. The available window light will help us decide where to begin, but we don’t need to use every room in your home. Still deciding whether you would rather stay home or head somewhere outside? You can read my Pros & Cons of Indoor vs Outdoor Family Sessions guide for a closer look at both options.
At-home newborn photography can be a great fit if you want:
-A relaxed experience without traveling shortly after birth
-Photos in meaningful and familiar spaces
-Time for feeding, diaper changes, soothing, and breaks
-Natural interactions between parents, siblings, pets, and the baby
-A mix of gently guided portraits and candid moments
-Digital and film photographs that preserve this season as it felt
My goal isn’t to make your day look perfectly polished. I want to document the small expressions, movement, connection, and details that make this chapter yours!
I recommend reaching out about two to three months before your expected due date whenever possible. Babies rarely arrive according to an exact schedule, so you don’t need to know your session date when you book. I’ll reserve room on my calendar around your due date. Once your baby is here, we can choose the exact date based on how your family is recovering and adjusting.
Didn’t get a chance to book ahead of time? Please still reach out. I may have space available for a last-minute newborn session.
Booking early simply gives us more time to talk through your vision, answer questions, and plan an experience that feels right for your family.

Newborn sessions typically take place during the first two weeks after a baby arrives, but there is no single perfect timeline. I also photograph newborns throughout their first three months. Some families feel ready to be photographed very quickly, while others need more time to recover, settle in, and get to know their baby. Both are completely okay!
During those first few weeks, babies may be sleepier and curl naturally into some of the positions they held before birth. As they get older, they might be more alert, expressive, and interested in what is happening around them.
Each stage gives us something different to document. The best time for your newborn session is when you feel ready to be present for it.
The best time will depend on both your baby’s routine and the natural light inside your home. Indoor sessions usually give us more flexibility than outdoor sessions. Before your session, I might ask about the direction your windows face, which rooms receive the most light, and whether your home feels brighter during the morning or afternoon.
When I arrive, I’ll also take a look around and decide which spaces will photograph best that day. You don’t need huge windows or a home filled with bright white light. As long as we have some natural window light to work with, we’ll create something beautiful!
I also do my best to work with your family’s schedule. Babies are unpredictable, and I never expect everything to go according to a perfect timeline. As a Bay Area newborn photographer and mother of two myself, trust me when I say that I understand, and I’m here to meet you where you’re at.
One of the biggest questions families ask is whether they need to deep-clean or completely prepare their home before I arrive.
You do not.
I’m not coming to photograph every room, inspect your home, or document the laundry sitting just outside the frame. We only need a few comfortable areas with available light.
Instead of cleaning your entire home, choose one or two spaces you may want to use. This might be your bedroom, the nursery, or a bright corner of the living room. Clearing nightstands, moving water bottles, or temporarily placing extra items in another room can help simplify the background, and that’s usually more than enough.
Natural light helps guide where we photograph. You can open curtains and blinds before I arrive, but you don’t need to rearrange your furniture ahead of time. I may suggest shifting something slightly once I see how the light is falling.
Your session does not need a theme or elaborate props. The details already in your home are often the most meaningful. Even one small detail can help make your gallery feel personal.
Details You Could Incorporate:
-A blanket made by a family member
-A favorite children’s book
-A piece of heirloom jewelry
-Nursery artwork
-A special outfit
-A meaningful stuffed animal
-Items saved from your own childhood
If your baby will be photographed in a diaper, swaddle, or simple outfit, you may want to keep the room slightly warmer than usual. You can also keep burp cloths, diapers, feeding supplies, pacifiers, and an extra outfit nearby. We can pause whenever your baby needs something.
My number one piece of advice is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and good about yourself. You don’t need to dress formally unless that feels like you. At-home newborn sessions work beautifully with relaxed clothing, soft textures, bare feet, and pieces you can move comfortably in.
And your outfits don’t need to match exactly. Instead, think about choosing colors and tones that complement one another.
A few ideas that photograph well at home:
-Soft neutrals
-Muted colors
-Earthy tones
-Comfortable dresses
-Simple button-down shirts
-Knit textures
-Solid-colored tops
-Clothing without large logos
Try to avoid choosing several competing patterns at once. One subtle pattern can work well, especially when the rest of the family is wearing simple colors.
I typically recommend choosing the outfit of the person who feels most unsure first. From there, we can build the rest of the family’s clothing around it. I’m also happy to provide styling guidance while we plan your session! You don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
Your baby doesn’t need several elaborate outfits. A simple onesie, soft sleeper, swaddle, diaper, or knit outfit can be enough. Newborn clothing can sometimes bunch around the face or overwhelm a tiny baby, so simple pieces usually photograph best.
You might want to have two options available in case of spit-up or diaper leaks. We can also photograph your baby wrapped in a favorite blanket or held close against your clothing. The focus will always be on your baby and your relationship with them, not on creating a complicated setup.
Older siblings are always welcome to be part of your newborn photos. I don’t expect young children to sit still, smile on command, or remain interested for the full session. We can give them room to move, play, take breaks, and interact with the baby in ways that feel natural. Sometimes the sweetest sibling photographs happen quickly. A toddler may want to hold the baby for only a few seconds, peek into the crib, bring over a favorite toy, or sit beside a parent. We’ll work with what they are willing to give us.
It can help to have snacks, water, or a favorite activity nearby. Another parent or caregiver can also step away with the older sibling when they need a break. Your child doesn’t need to be perfectly cooperative for us to create meaningful photographs.
Absolutely! Pets are often an important part of the family, and at-home sessions are usually the easiest way to include them. We can photograph your pet lying nearby or briefly interacting with the baby when it’s safe to do so.
I only ask that an adult remain responsible for supervising pets around young children and newborns throughout the session. We can also photograph them separately if your pet becomes overly excited or needs more space.

Your baby is allowed to be a baby. They might cry, need to eat, want to be held, need a diaper change, or decide they don’t want to sleep. None of that means the session is going badly. My newborn sessions typically include up to 90 minutes, which gives us space to pause when needed. Feeding, changing, rocking, bouncing, and soothing are all part of this stage of life.
Sometimes those in-between moments become meaningful photographs, too. A parent calming their baby or a sibling checking in can say just as much about this season as a quiet portrait. I don’t need or expect your baby to behave a certain way. I’ll follow their cues and gently adjust our plan as we go!

Not at all! I’m here to guide you throughout the session, including where to sit, how to hold your baby, and what to do with your hands when you’re feeling unsure. The direction I give is meant to help you feel comfortable, not overly posed. I might place you in good light and then ask you to look at your baby, move closer together, talk to your older child, or just take a breath.
There will also be plenty of room for natural interaction. You aren’t expected to perform or pretend that life with a newborn is perfectly calm.

Every session will unfold a little differently, but most begin with a quick walk through your home. I’ll look at the available light and ask where your family feels most comfortable. We might start the session in the bedroom, nursery, or living room depending on the time of day and what your baby needs.
Throughout the session, I might photograph:
-The whole family together
-Each parent with the baby
-Siblings interacting with the baby
-Quiet feeding or soothing moments
-Your baby alone in a safe and simple setting
-Tiny hands, feet, expressions, and other details
-Pets with the family
-Meaningful details throughout your home
And we don’t have to follow a strict order. If your baby needs to eat right when I arrive, we can start there. If an older sibling is excited and ready, we can photograph their portion first. I’ll keep guiding you while allowing the session to move at a pace that works for your family.

I want the experience to feel clear and supportive from your first inquiry through the delivery of your gallery.
1.) Connect: After you inquire, I’ll reach out to schedule a brief phone consultation. This gives us a chance to talk about your family, answer questions, and make sure we are a good fit. After our conversation, I’ll send over the booking information and next steps.
2.) Collaborate: A few weeks before your session, I’ll send you a questionnaire so I can learn more about your family and what you hope to remember from this season. We can talk through clothing, meaningful details, your home, siblings, pets, and any concerns you have before the session.
3.) Create: When session day arrives, I’ll guide you through the experience while keeping everything low-key and connection-focused. You don’t need to arrive with a list of poses or know what to do. That is what I’m here for.
4.) You Receive Your Photographs: Your professionally edited photographs will be delivered through a private online gallery, typically within four weeks of your session. I photograph with both digital and film, giving your gallery a mix of movement, detail, color, texture, and the feeling of this time in your family’s life.

I recommend reaching out about two to three months before your expected due date. This helps ensure I can reserve room on my calendar around your baby’s arrival.
You’re also welcome to inquire after your baby has arrived. I may still have availability.
You can book your session before your baby arrives without choosing an exact date.
I’ll reserve space around your due date. Once your baby is here, we can choose a day based on your recovery, the baby’s needs, and how your family is adjusting.
No. While many newborn sessions take place during the first two weeks, I also photograph babies throughout their first three months. There’s something worth remembering at every stage!
My newborn sessions typically include up to 90 minutes. This gives us enough time to create a varied gallery while still allowing for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, and breaks.
You don’t need a bright, perfectly styled house. I’ll look for the rooms and corners with the best available window light. Sometimes one window and a small amount of space are all we need.
That’s completely okay!
We can photograph in your bedroom, living room, or another comfortable part of your home. A finished nursery is not required for an at-home newborn session.
Extended family members may be included depending on the size and structure of your session. Reach out when booking so we can discuss who you want to include and plan accordingly.
Yes. If you, your baby, or another family member is sick, we can discuss rescheduling. I want everyone to feel safe and comfortable during the session.
Your private online gallery will typically be delivered within four weeks of your session date.

Every home and family brings something different to a newborn session. Some galleries unfold mostly in a sunlit bedroom, and other sessions include an energetic older sibling, a curious dog, a meaningful nursery, or quiet moments on the living room couch.
Below, I’m sharing real at-home newborn sessions from families throughout the East Bay, giving you a closer look at how personal and varied an in-home gallery can be.
This low-key at-home newborn session included all the little details that make photographing families at home feel so special. We incorporated the nursery, quiet cuddles in the living room, “kisses” from the family’s sweet fur baby, bottle feeding with Grandma, and relaxed family portraits throughout the house.
I also used the home’s architecture for creative framing, photographing the family through the doorway and front window before stepping outside into their blooming garden. Three generations, a beautiful home, sweet baby H and fur baby, and so much love made this session one to remember!

A newborn session is only one part of a year filled with change. For families who want to document several milestones, I also offer a Yearbook Collection that includes three photography sessions within one year. Many parents choose to use those sessions for maternity, newborn, and family photos, but we can create a plan based on the milestones that matter most to you.
You can find current session details, collection options, and availability on my newborn services page.
