Alameda Senior Portraits: A Colorful, Personal Senior Session
Senior portraits are such a fun way to document who you are right now. I loved making this Alameda senior portrait session feel completely personal to him. We started at the Alameda Rock Wall, one of his favorite places to fish. The Bay, San Francisco skyline, and blooming California poppies made such a beautiful backdrop.
I also recently photographed his mom’s wedding, which made this session extra special for me. I love getting to work with clients again and again as their lives change! From there, we incorporated his car and explored Alameda’s old Naval Air Station hangars and warehouses. The result was a colorful mix of candid and editorial portraits that still felt relaxed and completely like him.
Senior Portraits at the Alameda Rock Wall
We started L’s senior portrait session at the Alameda Rock Wall, one of his favorite places to spend time fishing. I always love when we can choose a location that already means something to you because it makes the photos feel that much more personal. Instead of showing up somewhere just because it looks good in photos, we were able to document him doing something he genuinely enjoys in a place that already feels familiar.
Spring made the waterfront especially beautiful, with California poppies blooming along the rocks and clear views across the Bay toward the San Francisco skyline. We mixed in relaxed portraits with photos of him fishing, then brought his car into a few photos too. It gave us such a fun mix of candid moments and more editorial portraits while still keeping everything easy and true to this season of his life.
Senior Portraits Around Alameda’s Naval Air Station
From the waterfront, we headed over to some of the old Naval Air Station hangars and warehouses that Alameda is known for. I loved the contrast between the softer, colorful Rock Wall photos and the more industrial feel of this part of the session.
The open concrete, oversized buildings, and weathered textures gave us a completely different backdrop without having to go far. We leaned a little more editorial here while still keeping things relaxed and natural, which gave the full gallery so much variety.
Film, Double Exposures & Photos With Mom
I also photographed part of this senior session on film. I loved including a few fun double exposures that added a little more color and creativity to the gallery. You’ll often find me mixing film into portrait sessions when it fits because it gives the images a completely different feel and makes room for a little experimentation.
We also made sure to take a few portraits with his mom. Senior year is such a big transition for the whole family. I always think it’s worth stepping in for a few photos together while we’re already there!
Making Senior Portraits Feel Personal
Your senior portrait session should feel like you, not like a checklist of poses you’ve seen a hundred times before. Bringing in something you love, whether that’s a hobby, your car, a favorite place, a sport, or anything else that feels like part of your everyday life, can make the session feel more natural and a lot more meaningful.
My goal is always to give you enough direction that you never feel awkward or unsure of what to do, while still leaving room for movement, personality, and the little in-between moments that make the photos feel like your own.

We can choose a location based on the look you love, but I also think about places that actually mean something to you. A favorite park, neighborhood, waterfront spot, or somewhere connected to one of your hobbies.
The summer before senior year and early fall are both great times for senior portraits. Especially if you want your photos ready for yearbook deadlines or graduation announcements. But there’s really no wrong time. We can plan your session anytime throughout your senior year.
