There’s something incredibly special about a three generation family session. The shared history, the laughter across decades, and the little moments that feel both fleeting and lasting all at once. As an East Bay family photographer, I love creating space for families to simply be together, especially in a setting as beautiful and dynamic as the Albany Bulb in Albany, California. It’s actually one of the locations featured in my Top East Bay Area Photography Locations for Family Photos blog because of its sweeping views of the San Francisco Bay, winding hillside trails, and open space to explore.
With the bright late summer sun and room to roam, this multi-generational session felt dreamy, colorful, and full of movement! Like many of my sessions, you’ll find that this was captured on a mix of digital and film photography.

The Albany Bulb is a great spot for three generation family photos because it truly has something for everyone. As an East Bay family photographer, I’m always looking for locations that feel open and dynamic, where kids can run, climb, and explore without feeling confined. Between the sandy shoreline, winding trails, and colorful art installations tucked throughout the hillsides, there’s endless space to move and discover. It allows families to relax into the experience rather than feel posed.
This family dressed casually, which was perfect for the setting. Soft tees, denim, and comfortable shoes made it easy to wander from the beach to the sculptures and up the trails without missing a beat. The result felt natural and candid. Joyful movement, genuine connection, and thoughtful portraits that reflect not just what this season looks like, but how it feels.

Most of my sessions are photographed using a mix of digital and film. Many families love blending the clarity of digital with the softness and nostalgia that film brings. As an East Bay family photographer, I find that film slows everything down in the best way. It invites presence and often leads to some of the most creative imagery from the session. I especially loved the double exposure images from this afternoon at the Albany Bulb. They feel dreamy, colorful, and a little unexpected.

Albany Bulb continues to be one of my favorite East Bay locations for family sessions because it offers something a little unexpected. There is space to wander, light that shifts beautifully as the sun lowers, and a sense of openness that invites families to simply be together. It never feels overly polished or predictable, which makes the imagery feel layered and real in a way that brings you right back to the day.
If you’re drawn to three generation family photos that feel candid and a little nostalgic, I would love to connect. Most of my sessions are photographed on a mix of digital and film, creating imagery that feels both timeless and alive with movement.
