The Family Narrative is an annual retreat for photographers focused entirely on the art and business of running a sustainable family photography business. When I first started my photography business during the pandemic, I joined the online retreat. I was blown away by the depth of knowledge shared and the openness and expertise of the instructors and participants. This wasn’t just any group of professional photographers, it really felt like a family. So I was overjoyed to participate in-person this past spring in one of my favorite places, Palm Springs. We stayed at Ace Hotel Palm Springs during the retreat.
The Family Narrative Educational Retreat for Photographers
Over the course of four days together I felt truly inspired by all of the talented artists and badass business owners in attendance. With my film cameras in tow, I snapped a range of portraits. We were there during the DesertX art installation in Coachella Valley. This provided additional creative inspiration and a beautiful backdrop for branding photos. I left feeling full of new information and inspiration regarding my artistic vision AND the practical processes of running a business.
Most importantly, I left with newly formed and more deeply established connections with a diverse group of talented family photographers. I hope to make it an annual practice of attending a photography retreat, not only to build community and gain insights into running a successful business, but also to provide fresh perspectives and techniques that fuel my creativity. What do you do to spark your creative process and sharpen your business acumen?
