This extended family photoshoot consists of four grown children who live all over the country. Together they planned a holiday gathering in the beautiful coastal town of Inverness in West California Marin County. There they rented a large house to spend quality time with their families and, most importantly, with their 85-year-old mother.
Altogether, there were 8 grandchildren in total ranging in age from 13 to 3 months old. Seeing cousins playing with one another, the couples interacting, and the adult children with their mother touched my heart! There was so much beauty in these multi-generational interactions.
Among my favorite images are the grandmother and her grandchildren. Those images reflect a legacy of grace and strength, and they are heirlooms the family will treasure for generations to come.
We gathered on a foggy morning and it added a beautiful element to the session. It accentuated the colors and softened the light. I keep things moving in extended family sessions starting with the large group and then allowing for individual family and couple photos, grandkids all together, grandparents with their grown children, and grandparents with their grandkids.
Holidays and special occasions that bring your entire family together are a wonderful opportunity for an extended family photo session! One of the most important things you can do to preserve your family memories, to freeze that time together, is to have family portraits taken. Here are the three reasons you should schedule an extended family photo session:
1. Time is Precious: Getting everyone together isn’t easy. Celebrate it. Cherish it. Document it! It’s always going to be hard to get everyone together, but I promise it will always be worth it.
2. Legacy: There are so many tender moments that happen during an extended family session. Grandparents get a chance to connect with their kids and their kid’s kids. All of the little grandkids have a chance to play together. Parents and siblings start to relax as they watch the people they love the most have so much fun together. That connection matters and leads to genuinely joyful photos and stories that you’ll be proud to look back on years from now. These moments will become your legacy.
3. Easy Gifts: During extended family sessions, we don’t just focus on the entire group together. There are endless family combinations, and we’re there to capture them all. Grandparents, parents and grandkids, couples’ portraits for every couple, cousins all together, you name it! The result is a year’s worth of easy gifts! Family albums, framed photos, holiday cards, the possibilities are endless! Extended family sessions are just plain fun. All your loved ones hanging around, laughing, and loving on each other? It is a blast!
