As an East Bay family photographer, one of the most beautiful locations in the East Bay area is Blake Garden of UC Berkeley. The location serves as a teaching facility for the UC Berkeley College of Environmental Design. There are a variety of flowers, trees, redwood groves, and even a creek there. Additionally, there is an old mansion and reflecting pool with views of the San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. This is a perfect location for Berkeley family sessions!
It’s a lesser known gem of the East Bay area, and it’s perfect for outdoor photos. This location’s only drawback is that it is only open weekdays from 9am to 4:30pm, so it’s best for sessions with children who are not in school or cannot meet right after school. However, if you have younger children and want to take outdoor photos in the East Bay, this is the perfect place.
Blake Garden is truly a unique location, and these outdoor family sessions at Blake Garden were stunning. All three sessions were with mothers and their child, and one included a grandmother visiting for a 3-generation photo session. I used a mix of digital and film cameras for these sessions.
I’ve always been drawn to adding film photos to my sessions. It’s just something about film that really transports you back to the moment. I also love capturing the bond of mothers with their children. Mother and child sessions have a special intimacy and result in meaningful photos, as mothers of little ones too often are not in the photos themselves.
With film, I had fun exploring double exposures and capturing the vibrancy of Blake Garden’s beautiful surroundings, such as the bright, blooming flowers. There are so many areas of this garden that kids can explore and discover, including a tunnel made of reeds.
